International Campaign for the Defense of Jerusalem Warns of Dangerous Escalation and Calls for Urgent International Action
The coordinator of the International Campaign for the Defense of Jerusalem, Jawdat Manna, stated that the situation in Jerusalem is "very difficult and dangerous," particularly with regard to Al-Aqsa Mosque, stressing that the occupation authorities have been preventing Muslims from accessing the mosque and keeping its gates closed for 36 consecutive days. He added that worshippers have been subjected to assaults while attempting to pray, and are sometimes forced to pray in nearby streets and squares.
Manna described what is happening at Al-Aqsa Mosque as "unprecedented since the Israeli occupation of the West Bank in 1967," warning that Israel is attempting to impose its control and Judaize the mosque, and cautioning that such measures pose a serious threat to the historic status of the holy sites.
He pointed to a clear double standard on the part of the occupation, noting that extremist settlers are permitted to pray in the area beneath the mosque for longer periods than Muslim worshippers are allowed. He reaffirmed the Campaign's rejection of these practices and its commitment to continuing the struggle to preserve the historic status of the holy sites in accordance with international law.
Manna also warned of the economic and social consequences of the siege, explaining that more than 400 commercial shops have been closed since February 28th, with over 15 military checkpoints surrounding the city, severely impacting Palestinians' daily lives, education, and commerce.
He emphasized the urgent need for concrete international action that goes beyond the issuance of condemnatory statements, calling for diplomatic, legal, and media mobilization to support the steadfastness of Jerusalem's residents and expose Israeli violations. He further noted that the Campaign is working with a team of more than 80 lawyers from around the world to examine the possibility of classifying these violations as war crimes and breaches of human rights.
