Two Jordanian news website have launched a project to translate wikileaks cables issues from the American Embassy in Amman and cables related to Jordan. AmmanNet.net and 7iber.com began this week posting translations of full translations of these cables.

A special page was created online for this purpose with two categories: Cables originated from the US Embassy in Amman, and cables related to Jordan and the Arab region. The page continuously provides unofficial translations of the leaks released on the Wikileaks website, with a link to the original document in English. The cables in Arabic can be reached at  and http://www.7iber.com/

"This translation aims to keep the Jordanian public in particular and the Arab audience in general up to date with leaks of these secret cables by removing the language barrier some people might face," said Mohammad Ersan, manager of AmmanNet website.

Ersan said he hopes that publishing these documents in Arabic will eventually lead to creating a sort of "Jordanian Wikileaks" by encouraging anyone who has important documents to publish them in the local media, especially with the lack of transparency regarding some issues in Jordan like the Casino case and the Dabouq land sale and others.

He stressed that the translation will be highly professional without censoring or hiding any information from the audience when translating to Arabic.

Lina Ejeilat, editor of 7iber.com commented about the significance of the project. "Wikileaks represents a new era in the audience's right to access information. It's important to put this vast amount of information in its local context.” Ejeilat pointed out that the effort seeks “to provide the local audience with the documents related to Jordan, in Arabic and without omissions or editing. What comes out of the access to this information is up to the reader."

Numerous volunteers are participating in the translation of cables related to Jordan, of which wikileaks says there are thousands which were sent from the US embassy in Amman.The translation is supervised by a team of editors from AmmanNet and 7iber.com"

AmmanNet and 7iber.com call on experienced and skilled translators to join the project to Arabize documents related to Jordan and everything released from the embassy in Amman since it is one of the largest sources of cables.

Wikileaks, the whistleblower website, started gaining importance since it released documents related to American military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 400,000 documents were released at once, a historical first for the release of that many military documents of an ongoing war. This brought much confusion and shock to the American administration in the face of wikileaks use of unprecedented decoding techniques.
