Abu Laila: We Missed Too Many Chances Against Austria and Are Looking to Beat Algeria

Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abu Laila said Wednesday that the Nashama's match against Austria marked the national team's first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup, noting that Jordan settled into the game well but failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Abu Laila said Austria ultimately decided the contest through set-piece situations.

He stressed that major World Cup matches are often determined by the smallest details, adding that Jordan has already turned the page on the defeat and shifted its focus to the next challenge.

Looking ahead to the upcoming clash with Algeria, Abu Laila described the North African side as a strong team, while expressing confidence in Jordan's players and their ability to compete.

"Algeria are a quality team, but we also have experienced players who believe in themselves," he said. "We hope to achieve a positive result and secure the win."

Abu Laila's comments came after Jordan suffered a 3-1 defeat to Austria in its opening Group J match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Austria took the lead through Romano Schmid in the 20th minute before Ali Olwan equalised shortly after the break in the 50th minute, scoring Jordan's first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup.

Austria regained the advantage in the 76th minute when Yazan Al Arab inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a corner kick. Marko Arnautovic then sealed the victory with a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Jordan will now prepare for its second group-stage fixture against Algeria before concluding its first-round campaign with a showdown against Argentina.
