Jordan Says Securing Water Supply Remains Top National Priority

Jordan: National Water Carrier to Deliver 300 Million Cubic Meters Annually

A source at Jordan's Ministry of Water and Irrigation said on Tuesday that securing water supplies for citizens and all sectors across the Kingdom remains a top national priority.

In a statement, the source said the government, in line with the national interest, had already developed and begun implementing contingency plans and alternative scenarios for all possible circumstances since last year to ensure uninterrupted water supplies. The remarks came in response to reports regarding the purchase of additional water quantities from Israel.

The source stressed that Jordan continues to receive its water entitlements as stipulated under the peace treaty. He added that the government's plans include an urgent program to rehabilitate a number of wells, increase their production capacity, equip and drill new wells in cooperation with the private sector, and utilize non-conventional water resources, including brackish groundwater. The measures also involve intensifying efforts to combat illegal encroachments on water resources, which have helped recover additional quantities of water to partially offset the country's drinking water deficit.

The source further noted that the Ministry of Water and Irrigation is continuing efforts, in coordination with the relevant authorities, to complete the financial close of the National Water Carrier Project. Once operational, the project is expected to provide around 300 million cubic meters of water annually, covering most of Jordan's water needs, addressing its chronic water shortage, and paving the way for the immediate implementation of the project.
