Civil Status Department selectively refuses to renew Jordanian passports

The Civil Status Department has recently refused to renew the passports of some citizens because their fathers were born in Palestine, an alternative means of withdrawing their national numbers. These acts came despite the decision of the former Minister of Interior Affairs, Saad Hayel Suroor, to put the withdrawal of national numbers for Jordanians of Palestinian origin on hold. Dr. Fawzi Samhouri, president of the Juthoor Human Rights Center, said that the Civil Status Department had no lawful right to stop renewing Jordanians’ passports under any circumstances.
