The Early Word: Another Health Care Plan
President Obama plans to offer up his own health care proposal on Monday, a few days ahead of the health care summit he’s hosting on Thursday, which will be televised. Details of the president’s proposal will be posted online at WhiteHouse.gov at 10 a.m.
Some provisions have already emerged, such as a proposal that would increase federal oversight of insurers to curb excessive rate increases, The Times’s Robert Pear and David Herszenhorn reported. The proposals under study by the White House are designed to bridge some gaps between the previous House and Senate bills.
Republican reception to the proposals in advance of the summit has been mixed, although Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in television interviews on Sunday that he and his Republican colleagues would attend the summit. House and Senate lawmakers return to Capitol Hill today after their extended President’s Day/snowstorm break.
Several G.O.P. lawmakers were in town late last week, appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference, where their opposition to overhauling the nation’s health care system was well-received by those in attendance. While Democrats for months have painted Republicans as belonging to the “Party of No” – from rejecting the president’s stimulus package to health care, conference speakers tried to turn that negative into a positive by saying it’s O.K. to say no to what they view as big government plans.
