Having just kicked off on Friday the 13th for its 19th edition, the Souk Jara  is a seasonal open-air market located next to the colourful Rainbow street in Jabal Amman. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and colourful craftsmanship, the souk has established itself as a cultural must-see during Amman’s summertime. Its forte lies in how it brings Jordanian traditional crafts and culture into the heart of the city’s modern lifestyle. In souk Jara, locals and tourists alike come to enjoy diverse artisanal creations and a warm, friendly ambiance. 

Founded in 2005 through a collaboration between the Jabal Amman Residents Association and the Amman Municipality, Souk Jara was created to promote local culture and provide artesans with a place to display their crafts. Today, it offers a valuable opportunity for emerging merchants to enter a wider market. Its strong sense of community is rooted in a shared goal of fostering collective growth. Its location, in one of the capital’s oldest neighborhoods, adds a touch of history to the modern lively contemporary feel. 

 

Today, the Souk Jara  features a wide array of items, from handicrafts, antiques, paintings, pottery to streetwear and home decor. The creative vision of the market is carefully curated when selecting vendors. This allows for art, in all its forms, to be the main focus of the event. Over the years, the market has evolved into a vibrant celebration of the jordanian culture and lifestyle. towards the end of the souk, the stalls are full with a great variety of local and regional delicacies, combining savory dishes and sweet treats. For those who prefer to cook at home, a wide variety of spices are also available. 

 

This creates a unique scene, where talents from across the kingdom are brought together and showcased. Occasionally, special events such as live concerts, magic shows and film screenings take place, drawing crowds from all over Amman. At its cors, Souk Jara thrives in its ability to combine different types of art, traditional and modern, presenting a distinctive snapshot of jordanian culture. 

 

The Souk Jara is open throughout the summer (and until September) on Fridays from 10am to 10pm. No fee or ticket are needed, so anyone is free to enjoy the atmosphere for a nice stroll. A special area for children is available, including fun activities and games. All these elements contribute to the souk’s enduring popularity, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.
