Launch of the 10th Ministerial Forum of the Union for the MediterraneanUnder the same sky that witnessed the birth of the Barcelona Process three decades ago, the city returns this coming Friday to host the foreign ministers of forty-three countries from both shores of the Mediterranean.
It is both a celebration of thirty years since the first ambitious declaration of a comprehensive Euro-Mediterranean partnership and, at the same time, the announcement of a new, stronger and more realistic phase.
The 10th Ministerial Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean is being held this year under the motto “Together for a Stronger Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.
” Co-chairmanship is shared between Jordan, represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, and the European Union, represented by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
Spain is hosting the sessions, led by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Ambassador Nasser Kamel
.The discussions will go beyond commemorating the anniversary to focus on the real challenges facing the region today. At the top of the agenda are confronting climate change
and its devastating effects on the Mediterranean basin, reducing economic and social disparities between the two shores, strengthening regional stability, and preventing the escalation of conflicts.
The most significant outcome of the forum will be the launch of the European Charter for the Mediterranean, a new political and strategic document that transforms the partnership from an annual dialogue into a binding, multi-year framework of action, charting a clear roadmap for the next thirty years.
Thirty years have passed, and the Mediterranean remains our shared sea. Today’s challenges are greater, and the need for genuine cooperation has become more urgent than ever before. Barcelona 2025 is not merely a memory; it is a new starting point.
